Guest Speaker Fran Curtis Brings her Expertise to CBK 7th Graders

curtis with students(March 3, 2023) Seventh graders in Isaac Stanford’s World Cultures and Geography class had the opportunity to work with guest speaker Frances Curtis, an expert in the field of Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S.).

Students are working on their StoryMap Projects, where they use advanced G.I.S.  software to share their research on a location they have selected. Curtis shared how she uses G.I.S. in her job working for Pennoni, a Philadelphia-based technology firm specializing in municipal engineering.

Curtis demonstrated how she uses cutting-edge technology, including artificial intelligence, and virtual and augmented reality to help municipalities and corporate clients plan for infrastructure projects and climate change.

This opportunity to speak with Curtis showed students how their work in the classroom connects to real-world career opportunities in technology-intensive jobs using 3D visualization, data analysis, and engineering.

Cedarbrook students are able to use some of the same tools used by professionals through a partnership with ESRI, a multinational software company. Following the presentation, students had excellent questions and showed Curtis how they use geolocation and satellite imagery in class.
