Eighth graders Mirabelle Hayes and Ingrid Kary have been named finalists in the New York Times Learning Network Editorial Contest. Hayes was chosen for her piece “Pick on Someone Your Own Size: A Skirmish of Cis and Trans Women in Sports”; and Kary for their piece called “Bigotry in Disguise: Parents in Education.”

Each student worked on their piece during WIN periods with challenge teacher Ms. Susanin for several weeks. They identified a topic about which they felt passionate, then drafted, researched and shared their work with others to gather feedback. They did numerous revisions to communicate clear and well-founded arguments.
