Five CHS Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists
Five Cheltenham High School seniors have been named semifinalists for the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship program. Announced on Wednesday along with approximately 16,000 other high school seniors, the CHS semifinalists are Nathan Kirschner, Christopher Luk, Nancy Sohlberg, Victoria Suarez and Jonathan Warsaw. The quintet has the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million. More than 1.5 million juniors from 21,000 high schools entered the competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. More than 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the “Merit Scholar” title. Students will find out in February whether they make it to the finalist stage. The scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April 2020.
