EP Student Performing in “The Nutcracker” at the Academy of Music

EP's Melecio Amaro to Perform in The NutcrackerElkins Park fifth grader Melecio Amaro, member of Jenkintown’s Metropolitan Ballet Company, will be performing in the Philadelphia Ballet’s December run of Balanchine’s beloved holiday classic “The Nutcracker” at the Academy of Music.

“At first I was very excited because I had no idea what I was going to learn and how many people would be on stage,” said Melecio. “Mostly, I’m excited to dance and be on stage with thousands of people watching.”

Melecio and a handful of other boys, including Glenside third grader Jace Johnson and his brother Julian Johnson, an EP sixth grader, will perform with Philadelphia Ballet company members in the role of “Party Boy.” The "Party Boys" will be paired with “Party Girls” during the opening scene of act 1, and will dance in pairs and as an ensemble. The child dancers are from Metropolitan and the School of Philadelphia Ballet. Metropolitan Ballet’s Artistic Director and founder Lisa Collins Vidnovic used to dance with the Philadelphia Ballet, which asked her to provide a cast of children to perform alongside the children enrolled in the School of Philadelphia Ballet.

An athletic boy who takes gymnastics and studies jujitsu, Melecio attends Metropolitan through its renowned boys’ scholarship program, which provides tuition-free dance training in all-male classes designed to enhance athletic skills, motor intelligence, balance, flexibility and strength. Approximately 55 boys ages 7–18 enroll each year to study beginning, intermediate, and advanced ballet, and partner with distinguished male dancers who serve as teachers and role models, and address the boys’ unique movement and learning styles.

Set to Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score full of cherished holiday tunes, “The Nutcracker” celebrates the season through a timeless story of youth, romance, magical battles, and boundless beauty. The show opens Friday, Dec. 10 and runs through the end of December.

Melecio and his fellow Metropolitan dancers will perform in 10 shows during the production run: Friday, Dec. 17, 7 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 18, noon and 5 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 19, noon and 5 p.m.; Monday, Dec. 27, noon and 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2 p.m.; and Wednesday, Dec. 29, noon and 5 p.m. Order tickets>
