Lady Panthers 2000 State Title Team to Be Honored Friday
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of winning Cheltenham High School’s first team state title, the 2000 Lady Panthers Basketball team will be honored during Friday’s home girls basketball game versus Springfield (0-8, 0-5). Opening tip is 7 p.m.
Come support the current Lady Panthers (3-7, 0-5) as they seek their first league win, and celebrate the anniversary of one of the most momentous athletic accomplishments in school history with Coach Schaefer and the numerous players who will be in attendance for the halftime ceremony. Friday is also Youth Night, and children 10 and under receive free admission.
Under legendary coach Bob Schaefer and with stars Andrea Jones, Shayla Johnson and Rachel Laws, the 2000 Lady Panthers had something to prove, having fallen in the state championship the season prior. Just as in 1999, the No. 2-seeded Lady Panthers finished the regular season with a 27-1 record.
The Lady Panthers started the tournament with close wins over Cumberland Valley (64-57), Central Bucks West (43-36) and Wilson (47-40) to reach the state semifinals. In that round, the Lady Panthers dominated Abington Heights, the No. 1 seed from District 2, 76-56, to reach the state final versus Oakland Catholic, the top seed out of District 7. In a nail-biter of a title game, CHS took care of business and prevailed, 54-52.
