students in a classroom(March 22, 2023) The CHS Reading Olympics team hosted three guest speakers from the EPA and Superfund as a follow-up to one of the books the team read this year, “Radium Girls.” Cassie Kunkle ‘08, program analyst, Ann DiDonato, Superfund On Scene Coordinator, and John Banks, Superfund Remedial Project manager, shared the story of young courageous women in the 1920s who fought for workers' rights from radium poisoning in the workplace. Their story as the “Radium Girls” continues today with the radioactive sites left behind that caused their deaths. One of the radium sites from the Safety Light Corporation in Bloomsburg, Pa., is currently undergoing cleanup to remove the radium from the area.
