CHS Orchestra Presents “A Night of Chamber Music”

students playing instruments(March 9, 2023) With nine numbers by six groups, the Cheltenham High School Orchestra gave a breathtaking performance in the Little Theatre on Wednesday night. 

The first group, Nicholas Abraham, Jeffery Yen, Mileyka Thach, and Elizabeth Stryker on violin, Samir Brinkley and Griffin O’Connor on viola, Marcos Trojan on cello, and Maram Kennerly and Theo Maher on bass opened the night with Percy Grainger’s “Mock Morris.”

Next violinists Cina Ha, Sophie Hockabout, Surrenity Mannon, Savannah Montague, Ava Sabulsky, and Emma Sabulsky, violist Joanna Gbemiye-Etta, cellist Anisa Garnett, and bassist Joey Diaz performed “Memory” by Andrew Lloyd Webber. 

The third group followed with “String Quartet No. 32, Op. 33, No. 3, IV. Presto” by F.J. Haydn. The group included violinists Emma Ravenell and James Beatus, violist Christopher Brutschea II, and cellist Nathanael Göellner.

Subsequently, the trio of Nicholas Abraham on violin, Sam Batiancila on viola, and Kaylee Brown on cello performed the trio of “Bacchanalia” by Frederic Chopin, “Wiener Deutsche” (Viennese German Dance) by Franz Schubert, and “Lied Ohne Worte” (Song Without Words) by Felix Mendelssohn. 

Violinists Hanah Emtage and Somto Amaefuna, violist Elad Shoham, and cellists  William Edgar and Mina Rothberg performed Franz Shubert’s “String Quintet in C major, op. 163, 1. Allegro.”

The show wrapped up with “String Quartet in C Minor, op. 18 No. 4, I. Allegro” by Ludwig Van Beethoven, performed by Izunna Amaefuna and Judah Blitstein on violin, Adora Abdul on viola, and Cedar Lawn on cello.
