Cheltenham High School alumnus Patrick Fleury ‘05 has been named athletic director at his alma mater, CHS Principal Jimmy D’Andrea has announced. Fleury, who will retain his position as boys basketball coach, assumes the reins of the 24-sport athletics program that competes in the Suburban One League American Conference, and will oversee Cheltenham High School’s more than 60 student clubs and activities.
“I am excited to welcome Mr. Patrick Fleury as our athletic director,” said Principal D’Andrea. “As a Cheltenham alum and teacher/coach at the school, Mr. Fleury has made great inroads building relationships with students, and he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position. Success in and out of the classroom for all of our students is his top priority.”
Under Fleury’s direction, athletics will have several goals, including reconnecting with alumni; creating avenues and opportunities for students to pursue professional careers in the sports and/or entertainment industry following high school; and improving retention, academic achievement and post-graduation success. Fleury’s goal is to achieve these milestones while reaching the highest level of success within activities and sports as a member of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA).
“Cheltenham is a special place with amazing people - past and present,” said Fleury, who will relinquish his special education teaching position at CHS. “The opportunity to serve as the community’s athletic director presents endless opportunities to help students reach their goals during and after high school. We would like to help create the next leaders of the world who maintain a strong sense of community with respect to their civic duties.”
For the past four seasons, Fleury, the 2021-22 Pennsylvania Co-Coach of the Year, has led the Panthers boys basketball team to a host of accomplishments and accolades, including numerous all-league / all-state player recognitions, multiple league titles, Suburban One tournament championships, and several deep runs in the District I and Pennsylvania 6A state tournament. In his four seasons, Fleury, the CHS school record holder for assists, has led the Panthers to an 87-17 record, and, this past season, the most victories in a season in school history (30) and in the state.
“My career as a teacher and coach has prepared me for this role,” Fleury said. “In both roles, I have learned leaders serve, support and empower others. In this role, my goal will be to emphasize consistency in our actions, humility in our disposition, sacrificing for the greater good and embracing and supporting others’ successes. I am lucky to have been a part of the Cheltenham family prior to this role, so I will lean on my relationships and experiences from being a part of teaching teams and academic programs to make sure the principles that lend towards success in the classroom are also embedded within our department.”
After a stellar high school career, Fleury played at Division II East Stroudsburg from 2005-09, and is seventh all-time in Warriors history with 345 assists and tied for eighth with 131 steals. The squad went 78-42 during his collegiate tenure on the hardwood. After he finished playing, Fleury earned a master’s degree in special education at ESU.
A native of Haiti, Fleury resides in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, with his family.
