CHS Music and Performing Arts Hosts 2019 Winter Instrumental Concert

Under the leadership of bands director Matthew Berntsen and orchestras director Matthew Hoy, the Cheltenham Music and Performing Arts presented its Winter Instrumental Concert Wednesday, Dec. 11. With members dressed in black from head to toe, the concert and symphonic bands, percussion ensembles, concert strings and chamber orchestra staged a 14-song performance which illustrated the depth and breadth of their abilities.

The concert band performed “Rhythm Stand” by Jennifer Higdon, “In the Bleak Midwinter” by Gustav Holtz with arrangement by Bullock and “Electricity” by Daniel Bukvich. The symphonic band’s set included the Ralph Vaughn Williams piece “Flourish for Wind Band,” “Colonial Song” by Percy Grainger with arrangement from Wagner and “Pedal to the Metal” by David Gillingham.

The concert strings performed “Fantasia for Strings” by Elliot del Borgo, the Hall-arranged Irish ballad “Slane (Be Thou My Vision),” which included the string trio of freshmen Celia Bluestine and Kaylee Brown and sophomore Grace Gilbert, and the Mannheim Steamroller version of “Faeries” with senior Clay Cohen on drumset. The chamber orchestra wrapped up the show with Bizet’s “L’Arlesienne Suite No. 1” and “Perseus” by Soon Hee Newbold.
