Drs. Lajara, Hammond “Kiss a Pig” for Financial Literacy

Kiss A Pig Fundraiser CHS Principal Dr. Renato Lajara and CHS Vice Principal Dr. Ben Hammond each took one for the team Thursday evening at the Abington Arts Center, planting a smooch on “Rains,” a 5-year-old potbellied pig as part of TruMark Financial Credit Union’s ninth annual “Kiss a Pig” financial literacy fundraiser.

CHS DECA raised $1,500 in order to participate and is eligible for up to $5,000 in grants to support DECA’s financial literacy initiative, which includes the club’s Financial Literacy Fair on Friday, Oct. 11 at the CHS Gymnasium. Cheltenham High School was one of more than a dozen schools and organizations to participate in the “Kiss the Pig” event.

A component of TruMark’s “Building Financial Futures” initiative, the fundraiser brought together educators, community and business leaders and credit union employees to raise money for the privilege of kissing a pig. Funds raised at the event will enable the 12 participating area schools (including Archbishop Wood, Bensalem, Lincoln and Norristown high schools) to provide students with the tools to learn basic personal finance, like fundamentals of saving, borrowing, and investing, and help them make informed financial decisions to secure a future of financial success. With student loan debt at an all-time high, programs such as this are more needed than ever. Since launching the initiative, TruMark has donated more than $300,000 to area schools in need of personal finance resources such as textbooks, computer software and math manipulatives which they might not be able to afford with their current budgets. The tools enrich the classroom experience and allow for more interactive lessons which make a greater impact on students.
