Junior India Brooks Participates in Department of Defense STEM Research Institute

India Brooks Rising junior India Brooks recently returned from the two-week residential Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Joint Science and Technology Institutes (JSTI) for High School students in Aberdeen, Md.

Spending hours in a lab and working with water samples from the Flint River, Chesapeake Bay and Frog Mortar Creek, Brooks and her team worked on microbiome-based antibiotic discovery for warfighters to diminish the impact of "super bugs."

The group's mentor Kyle Lewter, M.P.H., described the project as being "on a Ph.D. level." Click below to watch the group's final presentation.

JSTI exposes high school students to scientific research through hands-on projects, and enables students to work with Department of Defense scientists and STEM experts to inspire and increase awareness of career opportunities in STEM-related fields.
