Smith, Barnes Star as Track Teams Earn Medals at States; Boys 400m Relay Earns Fourth
Junior Brianna Smith earned four medals by finishing in the top eight in all four of her events and senior Bria Barnes took second in the 400m as the Panthers girls track and field team finished sixth overall with 20 points at this past weekend’s state championship at Shippensburg University. Smith took third in the high jump (5-7), fifth in the 100mH (14.65) and eighth in the long jump (18-5.5) and 300mH (45.02). Barnes’ 53.39 in the 400m qualified as the tenth-best time in the country this season and is the fourth fastest time in Pennsylvania history.
The boys 400m relay squad of senior Mason Jones, juniors Jamir Barnes and Nate Edwards, sophomore Sam Sykes won their preliminary heat, en route to finishing fourth (42.31). Jones qualified for the 110mH finals and Edwards qualified for the 100m dash semifinals. The team tied for 45th with five points.
