Cheltenham Hosts Unified Track and Field Meet

Unified Tack Participants Not even the weeklong threat of rain could dampen the spirits of those participating in the four-team Unified Track and Field meet on Friday, May 2. The sun came out just in time and the afternoon proved spectacular for this annual event that showcased athleticism and the human spirit.

The grandstand was full of students and faculty, all of whom came out to support their Unified Panthers versus Abington, Lower Merion and North Penn.

Pre-meet festivities began at 3 p.m., featuring Matt Bernsten and the CHS Drumline, followed by the National Anthem performed by the CHS Select Choir, under the direction of Jenny Hutton.

The Unified Track and Field participants from all four teams were individually announced as they ran through a double high five gauntlet of CHS Football players, cheerleaders, faculty and administration.

Before the action began, the words of the Special Olympics pledge rang loud and true, “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

The teams competed in the 100m, 400m, 800m, field events, 400m relay and 1,600m relays. On a day where just competing was enough of a win for many, the meet score was tallied and Abington (179.50) came out on top, followed by North Penn (135.50), Cheltenham (122.50) and Lower Merion (103.69).

The Unified Panthers’ next meet is May 8 at 3:30 p.m. at Methacton Area High School.
