Live Unified, Play Unified: CHS Unified Track and Field Kicks Off Fourth Season
ELKINS PARK (April 24, 2019) – With 38 competitors on the roster and four meets on the schedule, the Cheltenham High School Unified Track and Field team returns this spring for its fourth season of competition in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association.
Coach Gus Ekhardt is looking forward to building on the team’s fourth-place finish at the 2018 Montgomery County Unified Track Championships at Souderton.
“We are looking forward to a great season, as we have many returning letter winners and 10 new participants,” said Ekhardt, who shares head coaching duties with Tabatha Gilbert. Assistant coaches include Karen Cipparone, Mary Metzger and Penny Young.
Embracing the mantra, “Live Unified, Play Unified,” unified sports promotes social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences by partnering individuals with intellectual disabilities (athletes) and those without (partners). Unified sports support social inclusion through sport by employing a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.
The nearly 40 athletes and partners will train and compete together in the 100m, 400m, 800m, 400m relay, 1,600m relay, long jump, javelin and shot put.
Competing against Abington, Cheltenham, Lower Merion, Methacton, Souderton, North Penn, Springfield and Spring Ford, the 2019 Unified Track and Field schedule is as follows:
