EP’s Laylah Charlie Smith Earns Medal at AAU Nationals in 3,000 Meters
EP fifth grader Laylah Charlie Smith has been running distance events for three years, and she announced her presence on the national stage in a big way this past weekend with a medal-winning effort in the 3,000-meters in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Indoor Nationals in Prince George County, Md.
A distance runner who normally competes in the 800- and 1,500-meters and cross country, Smith entered her first 3,000-meters at AAUs on the counsel of her coach Oliver Williams, who thought she would do well because of her strength and endurance. Smith set the realistic goal of finishing the gruelling 15-lap race in 14 minutes. Instead, she finished in 12:55, placing seventh.
