Parent Workshop and Book Club Kicks Off with “A Strengths Based Approach to Flourishing”
District parents and positive psychology teacher leaders joined CSD Mindfulness/Positive Psychology coach Cindy Goldberg on Tuesday for an interactive evening centered on the importance of focusing on children’s strengths, rather than noticing their weaknesses. The Strength Switch by Lea Waters, Ph.D., was the featured reading for the event, the first of three such workshops the Office of Student Services is sponsoring.
In a world where the norm is to improve upon what’s lacking, Dr. Waters’ asks parents to make the switch and notice what’s right before addressing what’s wrong. Parents identified their strengths and discussed their children before heading home in an effort to attempt the strength switch in their own homes.
“I was trained to teach,” said Goldberg, who gave parents materials to assist them in their efforts. “But I received no training in how to be a good parent. Parents want what’s best for their children and face the challenges that come with that every day. Coming together and discovering that we are not alone as parents was a sentiment several participants shared.
The second workshop will be held in January, and is open to all , even those who didn’t make the first session. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to RSVP and be added to the email notification list.
