Cheltenham’s Elissa Johnson Earns Student of Month from Eastern Center for Arts and Technology
Cheltenham High School senior Elissa Johnson has been named the November 2018 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (Eastern) in Willow Grove. A student in Eastern’s Construction Technology program, Johnson is a class leader and student ambassador who helps with recruitment activities.
“Elissa works hard and shows dedication to the construction trade,” said Jeff Pakula. Eastern’s Construction Technology instructor. “She is personable and always willing to help others in the class. I am proud she was selected as student of the month.”
Johnson learned about Eastern’s programs through a presentation at Cheltenham High School, and followed up the presentation with a visit to Eastern’s Construction Technology and Protective Services programs. She knew she did not want a traditional career, that she wanted to be different. She also knew she wanted to help areas rebuild after natural disasters. Johnson enrolled in the Construction Technology program because she thought this skilled trade would help her achieve her goal. Construction Technology at Eastern is the first step for students interested in pursuing a successful career in the carpentry field.
At Cheltenham High School, Elissa is a member of the Black Scholars and Poetry Club and enjoys volunteering at Myers Elementary School, where she keeps the younger students on task. After graduating from Cheltenham and Eastern in June, Johnson wants to continue to enhance her construction skills. She is also considering postsecondary trade school options. Eventually, she would like to begin traveling to places such as Puerto Rico and Indonesia to help rebuild following disasters.
The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by Eastern’s faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.
Eastern is a public school serving students in nine Eastern Montgomery County school districts. Those districts include Abington, Bryn Athyn, Cheltenham, Hatboro-Horsham, Jenkintown, Lower Moreland, Springfield, Upper Dublin and Upper Moreland. Students benefit from specialized career programs that give them a competitive edge in college or in a career.
