Glenside Unveils Outdoor Sensory Playscape in School Courtyard

students playing tic tac toe(September 13, 2023) In collaboration with P.A.W.S., RB Lawncare LLC, and Unified Therapy Partners, Glenside Elementary unveiled its new outdoor classroom sensory playscape with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday night. The Glenside community explored the space and witnessed the smiles, laughter, and learning the space will bring to children.

Over the past five years, Glenside's PTO - known as P.A.W.S. (Parents at Work in School) - sought to be a thought partner with school administration to find a solution to the courtyard space and its tendency to be overgrown.

In consultation with RB Lawncare, LLC and Unified Therapy Partners, P.A.W.S. set out to create an outdoor classroom sensory playscape. The area consists of several “stations,” which include a tic-tac-toe wall; fidget wall with fidget spinners, locks, wheels, and a xylophone; hopscotch area; several seating areas; small stage; and garden of natural textures where students can feel rocks of various sizes, woodchips, stones, hay, mulch and more.

“This addition to Glenside’s school environment has been a labor of love,” said Glenside Elementary Principal Dr. Michelle Robinson, “made possible through the collective efforts of dedicated educators, generous supporters, and the unwavering commitment of the entire school community.

“It's a testament to what we can achieve when home, school, and the community come together with a shared vision for the future. We hope it will continue to grow and develop into a place of wonder, discovery, and growth for generations of students to come.”

In this sensory playscape, Glenside students will have the opportunity to engage with nature, learn through hands-on experiences, and develop skills that extend far beyond academic knowledge. This space is designed to stimulate scholars’ senses, foster creativity, and provide a haven for moments of reflection and inspiration.
