Author/ Illustrator Andrea Tsurumi Visits Wyncote Elementary

tsurumi reading their book to the class(March 21, 2023) Author/illustrator Andrea Tsurumi visited Wyncote’s kindergarten and first grade classrooms on Tuesday morning. They read “Mr. Watson’s Chickens,” a book Tsurumi illustrated, to the classes and taught them how to draw a chicken and a scribble monster.

Tsurumi is an author, illustrator and cartoonist originally from New York who lives and draws in Philadelphia. Their children’s books include “Accident!” and “Crab Cake” and they’ve illustrated numerous titles, like “Not Your Nest!,” “Girls Who Code,” “Sharko & Hippo,” “Mr. Watson’s Chickens,” and the “Kondo & Kezumi” series. 

As a cartoonist for adults and children, their comics include “How to Pool,” “Why Would You Do That?” and “A Week after the Wedding.” Tsurumi’s work has also  appeared in “The Believer,” Locust Moon Press, “Ink Brick,” “The Brooklyn Rail,” “TOON Books,” Hic & Hoc Press and they have been recognized by the Society of Illustrators. 

Tsurumi received a B.A. in English from Harvard and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, where they taught sequential storytelling for a summer residency.
