national merit scholarship finalistAfter earning semifinalist status in the fall, Cheltenham High School senior Romero Jorge Schwarz has been named a finalist in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship program competition. He will compete for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarship awards worth more than $30 million.

Schwarz is among the approximately 15,000 finalists to advance out of the nationwide pool of 16,000 semifinalists. To become finalists, semifinalists had to submit a scholarship application, have an outstanding academic record, be recommended by a school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores confirming their qualifying test performance.

Schwarz, who is nearing Eagle Scout status and works at Daryl's Pastries in Glenside, is a member of the CHS Computer Science Honor Society. He will take a gap year following graduation, and eventually plans to attend college and major in computer science.

Since 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, has conducted the annual National Merit Scholarship Program, which underwrites the scholarships in conjunction with approximately 400 business organizations and higher education institutions.

Winners will be announced beginning in April 2022.
