10TH ANNUAL LIFE SKILLS THANKSGIVING FOCUSES ON GRATITUDE

skills for life thanksgivingNow in its 10th year, the Thanksgiving feast CHS Life Skills students host helps them hone the abilities to prepare for a dinner party. Focusing on developing their math, reading and writing skills, the students created the menu, found recipes, wrote the shopping list, went food shopping, cleaned and decorated the Life Skills apartment to get ready for the big day and cooked the sumptuous repast. Dishes included turkey rolls, mixed veggies, macaroni and cheese, stuffing, candied yams and many other Thanksgiving staples. The apartment was decorated with color-by-number turkeys and “I am Thankful” acrostics. Students created construction paper leaves with fun facts about Thanksgiving written on them. Teachers Philip Cohen and Vonnie Yeomans emphasized gratitude with students throughout the entire process, building on the lessons learned in their gratitude journals. View a slideshow of the festivities>
