Senior Named Semifinalist in National Merit Scholarship Competition

Senior Named Semifinalist in National Merit Scholarship CompetitionCongratulations to Cheltenham High School senior Romero Jorge Schwarz for being named a semifinalist in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship competition. Schwarz, who is nearing Eagle Scout status and works at Daryl's Pastries in Glenside, earned the recognition along with approximately 16,000 other high school seniors from across the country. A member of the CHS Computer Science Honor Society, Schwarz will take a gap year after graduation and plans to attend college to major in computer science. He has the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. More than 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the “Merit Scholar” title. Students will find out in February whether they make it to the finalist stage. The scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April 2022.
