Rachel Hanes, Matthew Nolen Make Finalist Cut for National Merit Scholarships
Elkins Park (February 18, 2021) - After earning semifinalist status in the fall, Cheltenham High School (CHS) seniors Rachel Hanes and Matthew Nolen have been named finalists in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship program competition. The seniors will now compete with approximately 16,000 high school seniors (from the 1.5 million who took the PSAT as juniors) for some 7,600 National Merit scholarships worth more than $30 million.
Hanes has applied to Columbia, Michigan, Drexel and others with the intent to study mechanical engineering. An honor roll student in advanced placement and honor classes, Hanes serves as president of the National Art Honor Society, and is involved with the CHS cybersecurity team. Nolen is a steady honor roll student who participates in shot put with the Panthers track and field team, and looks to study applied mathematics in college.
Since 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, has conducted the annual National Merit Scholarship Program, which underwrites the scholarships in conjunction with approximately 400 business organizations and higher education institutions.
