2020 Grad Chi Chi Ojukwu Earns Dannehower Award
Chinyelu “Chi Chi” Ojukwu, a recent graduate from Cheltenham High School, has been recognized as one of 17 Montgomery County students to receive the Dannehower Award from the Triangle Club of Montgomery County.
A cross country and indoor and outdoor distance runner, Ojukwu co-captained both squads this past season and was a member of the girls outdoor track and field team which has won seven consecutive District I titles. A member of the National Honor Society who made honor roll all but one semester at CHS, Ojukwu will continue her education at the University of Pennsylvania.
“Chi Chi was hands down one of the hardest workers I have had the pleasure to coach,” said cross coach Drew Magaha. “Whether it was on the track or in the classroom, Chi Chi poured her heart and soul into mastering her craft and was never afraid to take on a new challenge.
“As a leader, Chi Chi was always quick to identify learning opportunities amongst younger athletes and, whether it was demonstrating new form technique or help with math homework, she always took the time to help others in need. Those around her can see that she loves what she does and often try to emulate her passion.”
Throughout her career, she’s posted outdoor personal bests of 2:26.8 in the 800m and 5:51.22 in the 1600m; indoor personal bests of 2:30.09 in the 800m, 5:39.06 in the 1500m and 5:56.09 in the mile; and cross country bests of 19:06.40 on a 4000m course and 21:40 on a 5000m course.
“These students truly embody the very best and brightest that Montgomery County has to offer in the field of sports, scholarship and service,” Triangle Club of Montgomery County President Douglas H. Lavenberg wrote in an email. “The winners are a testament to the outstanding commitment and leadership each of your programs have for education, coaching, and community outreach.”
