Happy New Year. I hope you had the opportunity to spend time with family and friends during the winter break and are excited to welcome in 2019. As we celebrate the arrival of a new year and new opportunities, I am sad to announce Dr. Gerry Doria-Fitzpatrick will be retiring as the principal of Elkins Park at the conclusion of the 2018-2019 school year.
Dr. Doria began her tenure as Elkins Park principal four years ago, and in that short amount of time, Dr. Doria - with the support of her leadership team and staff - have significantly shifted EP’s trajectory qualitatively and quantitatively. During her tenure, we have seen unprecedented gains in student outcomes, staff collaboration and a more nurturing and supportive climate and culture. Her strong professional development lens helped to lead a new fifth-grade self-contained program, implementation of Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports, mindfulness, balanced literacy, cultural proficiency and myriad professional learning opportunities for faculty and staff.
It’s hard to say goodbye, but Dr. Doria has left her mark with our families, students and staff, and we look forward to continuing the momentum she helped build. Dr. Doria’s more than 30 years of experience as an educator has served families, students and staff extremely well. We will miss her and wish her luck in the next phase of her life.
We will begin the search for the next Elkins Park principal immediately with the posting of the position this week. We will work closely with Elkins Park PTO and staff as we seek representatives to be part of the interview panel.
As we look at the remaining months left in the school year, we are optimistic that we will have a candidate presented to the Board of School Directors for consideration no later than Tuesday, May 14 with an anticipated start date of Monday, July 1.
In the meantime, please find the opportunity to thank Dr. Doria for her tireless and selfless commitment to Cheltenham and the Elkins Park family.
