The Friends of Cheltenham Community Tennis Program at EP
This September, Friends of Cheltenham Community Tennis, a subsidiary of The Friends of Cheltenham Phys Ed, a 501-C3 non-profit organization that has solely served Cheltenham students, initiated an After School Tennis Program at Elkins Park School with the support of Dr. Marseille, Dr. Fitzpatrick-Doria and Ms. Michele Staroba, (an EP teacher who competes in national tournaments). Students in the program met on eight Wednesday afternoons in the EP gymnasium for a 90-minute session that focused on player’s skill development, scoring, and sportsmanship. The fall session ended this past Wednesday and the Winter-Spring session will start following the winter break. Due to demand from the community, there is a desire to expand the current EP program and extend the focus to the seventh and eighth grades so that students can continue to develop their tennis skills.
The Friends of Cheltenham Community Tennis was formed originally to support the needs of Cheltenham High School teams and community. They raise funds through USTA, (United States Tennis Association), sanctioned tournaments. For the past six years, the money has been used at the high school level for clinics, indoor court time, spirit wear and court maintenance.
Most recently, The Friends of Cheltenham Community Tennis added the elementary school program to their focus and were approved for a grant from the USTA Middle States office to equip all five elementary schools with age-appropriate tennis equipment for the physical education programs. The grant allowed them to purchase 150 racquets, 14 dozen foam balls, 10 nets and throw down lines. Cheltenham School District elementary PE staff attended a 10 and under tennis workshop, given by the USTA, during a teacher in-service day. These workshops emphasized drills for K-6 aged students, using gymnasium short courts.
The Friends of Cheltenham Community Tennis, a subsidiary of The Friends of Cheltenham Phys Ed organization, which has been raising funds for nine years through the 5K The Run for Jake event, to support the athletics and activities at Cheltenham High School. These funds have been used to build, equip and maintain the high school weight room, pay for staff water safety instruction certifications, along with many other activity requests.
