Glendside mindfulness visit

Students in Mrs. Goldberg's class were thrilled to receive a visit from Louis Alloro, recognized expert in mindfulness and positive psychology. Mr. Alloro is the director of the program with which Mrs. Goldberg recently earned her Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (CAPP). This special visit was for Mrs. Goldberg’s own teacher to visit her own class with whom she is doing amazing work to infuse the science of human wellbeing and success.
Mr. Alloro's visit included a discussion on the various ways that we feel and how our emotions impact our daily lives. He read Dr. Seuss' "My Many Colored Days" with the class and then led a colorful activity/discussion on the various emotions that we, as human beings, feel. Utilizing skittles candies that represented our emotions, Mr. Alloro invited each student to select a candy and talk about a time when they felt a particular feeling. Students talked about moments when they felt excited, happy, sad, mad, and calm...just to name a few. Mr. Alloro assured students that all of their emotions are healthy and that, like Dr. Seuss indicated in his book, sometimes we even feel more than one at the same time.
At the end of the period, students and teachers engaged in a dance party, which positive psychology researcher Bene Brown says is a good marker that there is wellbeing in the room. A call-to-action is to try this with your families as a way to build authentic positive emotion.
