Documentary Featuring Young Alumni to Premiere at UPG’s “Why Choose Cheltenham” Open House
As part of its “Why Choose Cheltenham” Open House on Monday, March 23, the United Parents Group (UPG) will debut the short documentary “Why Choose Cheltenham: Alumni Voices” featuring interviews with recent CHS graduates.
Alumni interviews include 2016 grads Corin Duey, Jonathan McCoy and Lucy Toledo; 2017 grad Matthew O’Neill; 2018 grads Jeremy Elvas, Sophie Koval and Zachariah Gharrafi; and Class of 2019 grads Bria Morgan, Garrett Schmidt, Jada Holland, Nimi Badejoko and Savannah Latimer.
The alumni/ae are the embodiment of the breadth of CSD students’ interests and pursuits, and represent diverse experiences, including a student who received a certificate in construction technology from Eastern Center for Arts and Technology and landed a job right after graduation. Others attend Ivy League, HCBU and women’s colleges, in addition to local institutions. Their studies range from linguistics to environmental engineering to jazz guitar.
UPG board members Abby Fishman, a Spanish teacher at Cedarbrook Middle School, and Anna Sappington collaborated to create the video.
“I can’t wait for the community to hear the voices of these incredible young men and women,” said Fishman. “As a parent and teacher in the district, I am so gratified to hear them attribute their success to the academic and social lessons they learned in Cheltenham.”
Sappington added, “I’ve loved hearing what they’re up to. Parents sometimes worry about kids being able to take the next step and transition from high school to life beyond, and this project confirms what we’ve been hearing anecdotally: CHS grads find themselves well equipped for college and other pursuits.”
“Why Choose Cheltenham: Alumni Voices” will premiere at UPG’s “Why Choose Cheltenham” Open House Monday, March 23, at Cedarbrook Middle School (300 Longfellow Ave., Wyncote, PA 19095). Doors open at 6:30, and the event begins at 7 p.m. Other activities will include keynote speaker Atara Saunders CHS ’20; performances and demonstrations by various clubs and organizations from all school levels in theater, music, language, science, life skills, and athletics; short presentations about the academics and other opportunities available at Elkins Park School, Cedarbrook Middle School and Cheltenham High School; and informational tables hosted by school, parent, and community groups.
