Equity Statement

Equity illustration The district has undertaken the challenge of eradicating the systemic inequities existing in our school district with regards to the disparity among and between students of particular demographic groups as it relates to student achievement outcomes. 

Our strategic plan was built on a foundation of equity, access and opportunity.  Within each of the strategic plan’s five pathways, you will find language speaking to our commitment to excellence for every student. In “Pathway 2: Student Achievement,” we committed to a lofty goal calling for the deliberate focus on closing the gaps in achievement to ensure all students - without exception - grow, learn and achieve. Ernest Boyer stated it best, “To push excellence today without continuing to push for access for less privileged students is to undermine the crucial but incomplete gains that have been made. Equity and excellence cannot be divided.” 

As a district and community, we can’t thrive as an organization or family when a significant number of us do not meet grade-level benchmarks or access to rigorous experiences is not provided equitably. In the past four years, we have traveled a long and bumpy road filled with stories of individual and collective success as reported in our annual strategic plan updates. Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3

The board of school directors, administration and the community members lent their voices in developing the equity statement that will be the catalyst for the development of an equity policy prior to the end of the 2020 school year.  

We are proud to have partnered with the University of Pennsylvania’s Coalition for Educational Equity and Pennsylvania School Boards Association in support our equity journey.

The only way we can be a stronger Cheltenham is to talk about change and be willing and ready to implement that change. Please stay tuned as we will be sharing with you in the coming year a draft of that policy to gather once again your suggestions and recommendations.

In the meantime, please find some time to review some of the many resources we have been using to frame our lens on equity.  

Educational equity is a shared commitment to ensure every student receives what they need to be successful. The Cheltenham School District Board of School Directors and Administration believe all students, regardless of background or identity, must be given meaningful and engaging learning opportunities and allowed to thrive.

It is unacceptable that the educational outcomes of students in our district are overwhelmingly predictable based on students’ race, socioeconomics, ethnicity or learning differences. 

 Our community’s future success depends on our willingness, commitment and ability to effectively address equity challenges. To this end, we will dismantle institutional barriers by adopting policies and practices and strategically allocating resources that support access and opportunity for each and every student.
