Over 300 Guests Celebrate Intergenerational Day at Elkins Park School
A decades-long tradition at Elkins Park, Intergenerational Day was celebrated Wednesday, May 22. On this day, fifth grade students invite a special someone in their life from a different generation to spend the day with them at school. For the last six years the event has been organized by fifth grade teacher Cori Ayers who would like to thank the over 300 guests for coming and the PTO who was incredibly helpful in making everyone feel welcome.
Students and adults enjoyed classroom activities such as Kahoot trivia competitions, music bingo, art projects, iPad scavenger hunts, and fierce games of badminton in the gymnasium! Our music department delivered an amazing concert which showcased our band, orchestra, choir, and drummers.
Under the direction of music teacher Margaret McKay, the choir sang Remember Me (Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez/Roger Emerson), The Lion Sleeps Tonight (George David Weiss, Hugo Peretti, and Luigi Creatore/Jeff Funk), Night Winds (Joseph Cotter, Jr., alt. and L.F./L. Farnell), Earth Dance (Vivian Murray Caputo), and Onawa’s Waltz (John Krumm). The beginner band directed by music teacher Laura Moore, performed Groove Machine by Randy Navarre, Farewell at Dawn by Bruce W. Tippette, and Monuments by Sean O'Loughlin and sounded terrific despite only starting to play this past October.
The fifth grade orchestra led by music and strings teacher Judy Harvey performed Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star (Traditional/arr. J. Harvey), Minstrel Boy (Traditional/arr. J. Harvey), British White Feathers (Traditional), Hunters Chorus (Carl Maria von Weber, arr. R. Meyer), and Harvey’s own original composition Russian Dance! It was hard to believe this was only fifth grade! Lastly, music teacher John Moran’s students gave several high-energy performances on the African drums.
At the end of the day guests and students were all smiles after making memories together. Participants gave many compliments and expressed appreciation for a great day. Please enjoy the video of the day’s highlights. #CSDimpact #ElkinsParkPride
