Service Projects, Historic Recitations, Song and Dance to Highlight Cheltenham’s MLK “Day On”

MLK Day of Service Flyer Hundreds of Cheltenham School District students, parents and community members will gather at Cheltenham High School on Monday, Jan. 21 for service projects, performances and birthday cake to commemorate the memory and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the District’s annual “Day On.”

Each school will perform its own service project, some of which include creating flashcards for incoming kindergarten students, no-sew blankets and bags to fill with toiletries and other essentials for those less fortunate, breakfast bags for the homeless, and collecting books, coats and stuffed animals for children. Some of the organizations the schools have partnered with include Laurel House, Pennsylvania Workwear program and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

Prior to students engaging in their service projects, community members will be treated to performances by the Elkins Park School African Drum and Dance Ensemble, Cedarbrook’s Explosion and Conscious Minds hip hop dancers and rappers, local dance troupes, recitation of MLK’s “I Have a Dream” by Glenside Elementary school student Taji Belle and a version of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” with audience participation. Pennsylvania State Representative Steve McCarter and CSD Board Chair Julie Haywood will also speak.

The day will wrap up in the high school’s senior cafeteria to sing “Happy Birthday” to Martin Luther King and enjoy birthday cake.
