This week, Cheltenham Elementary is celebrating Computer Science Education Week with an Hour of Code. Every classroom from kindergarten through fourth grade is participating in an activity learning how to program computers.
For the fourth year in a row, Cheltenham High School students from teacher Sarah Putterman’s computer science classes are joining the CES students to help them solve problems and gain coding skill. Students are exploring coding puzzles with fun themes like caring for puppies, solving mazes, astronomy, and music.
Students also learned about Grace Hopper, the “grandmother of computer science.” Hopper was a coding pioneer and invented the first compiler that allows people to write code in language understandable to humans. Coding teaches students problem solving, collaboration, and computational thinking, skills which they can apply in many different areas of school and life.
Students in second through fourth grade have ongoing opportunities to learn coding and robotics in the CES iLab every year, and the school also hosts an annual Tech Discovery Night for the community. This year’s seventh annual event will take place on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
