Cheltenham senior Zaynah McFarlane is getting the hands-on experience she needs to pursue a career in the medical sciences through the CHS Diversified Occupations program.

Inspired by a family of medical professionals, McFarlane has been working for Lang Chiropractic in Abington for its focus on rehabilitation and patient care, noting the field's unique ability to help people through movement.

Working alongside Dr. Janet Lang, McFarlane has moved beyond textbook diagrams to witness real-world recovery. "I got to see one patient who could barely walk and now she can move on and off the table very easily," McFarlane noted, highlighting the impact of consistent care and the mindfulness required to support patients in pain.

The transition from student to professional required more than just medical knowledge; it required confidence. While initially nervous to speak with adult patients, McFarlane now maintains ongoing conversations with weekly regulars, describing the experience as "intriguing, fun, and consistent."

Though originally torn between becoming a physical therapist (PT) or physician assistant (PA), this experience has expanded McFarlane’s horizons to include the possibility of becoming a doctor.

For other students entering the field, she offers a simple strategy for success: stay curious. "The job might feel repetitive, but you learn something new every day. Communication is really important. If you don't ask, you’ll never know,” she said.

McFarlane’s own future is bright. She has applied and been accepted to Drexel University, Towson University, Temple University, Arizona State University, Texas Southern University, and Louisiana State University. She plans to study exercise science or kinesiology.
