For its second project of the year, PBL9 examined the essential question, “Do you have enough?” and designed wooden and 3-D printed pieces, including book ends, paper towel holders, coasters and a bureau, which were sold at a special event Thursday night in the CHS Library. Sales totaled around $600, which will be donated to the CSD Student Services Department for local families in need.
During the project, students read Matthew Desmond’s nonfiction text “Evicted” which details the lives of eight families from Milwaukee who struggle with financial stability and deal with the possibility of eviction on a constant basis. Additionally, students watched the series “Maid” to better understand and analyze the effect of poverty on single mothers and children. To conclude their studies, students conducted research in the areas of personal finance, the housing market, federal spending related to poverty, and gathered national and local data on homelessness, which illustrates the issue’s prevalence throughout the United States. The students illustrated the effects of homelessness on infographics.
