“Jackie’s Adventures in the Multiverse Worlds,” a play by Myers Elementary teacher Dawn Rice’s third grade class (pictured) this past year, has been selected to be performed at the Philadelphia Young Playwrights’ (PYP) SaturPLAY! event on January 16, 2027, at the Please Touch Museum. SaturPLAY! is a family-friendly event featuring short plays and monologues written by Philadelphia-area students, selected by a committee of nearly 70 alumni, artists, staff, teachers and others, and performed and directed by local theater professionals.

“Jackie’s Adventures in the Multiverse Worlds,” which PYP actors performed last year at Myers, finds the protagonist Jackie trapped inside a video game and her subsequent attempts to escape. Along the way, she meets Purrito, a chubby calico cat with a witch hat, broom, wand, and magical powers; Saturn, an alien with green antennae with stars on the end; Fiona (AKA Mrs. Glop), a green zombie werewolf at night who still has her soul; Timmy Jimmy (AKA The Black Hole), a giant, talking black hole in the sky, and a man, Michael Corny, who can clone himself.

“You start with high stakes, with the threat of Jackie becoming a video game character just like Purrito on page 3,” read the critique, “and you continuously come up with thrilling situations for your characters to be in.”

SaturPLAY! is part of the Young Playwrights Play Development Series, which brings student works to life on stage. Each year, Philadelphia Young Playwrights invites students to submit their plays and monologues to the annual playwriting festival. Plays are considered by the literary committee—a collection of nearly 70 program alumni, artists, staff, teachers, and others—who read and write individualized responses to every play.

SaturPLAY! works were selected from over 500 submissions from different schools across the Delaware Valley. Special thanks to Eddy Laughter, Myers’ PYP liaison, who helped the group through the submission process.
