Dr. Benjamin Hammond Named Principal at Cheltenham High School

After serving in an interim capacity since July 1, Dr. Benjamin Hammond has been named principal at Cheltenham High School (CHS), effective April 9. The CSD Board of School Directors approved his appointment at its April 8 legislative board meeting. 

Dr. Hammond is a familiar and trusted face in the CHS community, having served in numerous capacities there for more than two decades, most recently as vice principal for eight years.

“This decision was rooted in more than just experience,” said CSD Superintendent Dr. Brian W. Scriven. “It was about choosing someone who truly understands the heart and soul of our high school. A strong school leader must not only be effective in management and instructional leadership, but must also understand the culture, values, and lived experiences of the school community. Our new principal brings exactly that. Dr. Hammond’s deep knowledge of our school’s traditions, relationships, and goals allows him to lead with authenticity, empathy, and purpose.”

By selecting someone who is already part of the school family and committed to the district’s long-term vision, the district is investing in a future marked by stability, trust, and growth. 

“Consistent leadership ensures we can build on our successes, maintain momentum with important initiatives, and continue creating a positive, inclusive school climate where every student thrives. When leadership turns over too frequently, it can disrupt that progress,” Scriven added.

During his tenure at Cheltenham, Dr. Hammond has been instrumental in fostering a culture at the school that supports students’ academic and social-emotional growth, and where students exhibit Cheltenham PRIDE (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, and Empathy) in their daily interactions. He has also played a critical role in expanding course offerings and extracurricular activities, resulting in numerous opportunities for students inside and outside the classroom.

A resident of Bucks County, where he lives with his wife and two daughters, Dr. Hammond earned his doctorate in educational leadership from Saint Joseph’s University. His dissertation was titled “Cultural Ecological Theory and Black American College Male Perceptions: Successful Coping Strategies towards the Community and Educational System Forces Encountered During their High School Years.” He also has a master’s degree in education from Gwynedd Mercy University and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Albright College.
