Avril Somerville | English
I am a writer, community servant, wife and mother. I have the distinct pleasure of teaching 10th grade English in the 10th grade and 11th grage PBL. Though my professional experience includes time in the corporate sector at a Fortune 100 company, I've always believed in the necessity of doing work that aligns with my core values, gifts and purpose. This self-discovery led me to the classroom where I am finally able to nurture my passion for lifelong learning, literature, and child advocacy. I began as a first-grade teacher in Somerset, New Jersey, and held several related positions since — in and out of the classroom — including as homeschool educator, private tutor, curriculum consultant and summer school teacher.
During my time away from the classroom, I penned and published my first book, A Journey Of Life On Purpose. I also incorporated an independent micro-press. I enjoy speaking to others about the significance of crafting and sharing their own narratives. I chose Cheltenham High School to do much of this same work.
I am an immigrant from the Commonwealth of Dominica who feels welcome in the Cheltenham community; my goal is to ensure all of my students also feel welcome and included. I live in Glenside with my husband and three children, all of whom have been or are students in the Cheltenham School District.
