Salvete, Omnes!
Teaching the Classics is my vocation, to which I have been dedicated for 16 years. I first began as an AmeriCorps volunteer teacher at a small Nativity School in Baltimore for three years, then two as a full-time faculty member. After the Nativity School, I moved to Rome (for about 2 years in all) to study with my teacher, Father Reginald Foster, the Vatican’s chief Latinist. I returned to Philadelphia to study Ancient Greek intensively for two and half years to round out my own classical education before accepting my current position at Cheltenham High School and Cedarbrook Middle School. I have been teaching Latin in the district now for 11 years. My pedagogy is best encapsulated in this short phrase, “The quality of your attention determines the quality of your life.” The substance of the topics paired with the required skill development provides students with the self-determination needed to decipher and to navigate the world around them. Latin is unparalleled in its interdisciplinary gravity, from poetry to prose, from propaganda to politics, from infrastructure to architecture, i.e. there is something for everyone!
