Class Expectations/Requirements Class Expectations/Requirements

As students make the transition from The Elkins Park School to Cedarbrook Middle School, our expectations of them change.  In order to promote growth in the physical, cognitive and affective domains these expectations become more challenging.

A physical education student at Cedarbrook Middle School is expected to:

  • BE PREPARED WITH PROPER ATHLETIC ATTIRE AND CHANGE INTO THIS ATTIRE FOR EACH GYM CLASS.   (Proper attire is:  t-shirts that cover the shoulders (no tank tops), shorts that cover the back side and thighs, sweatshirts, sweatpants,  windbreaker jackets and pants, fleece tops, socks and APPROVED ATHLETIC SNEAKERS.                                                                                           UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY ANY OTHER FOOTWEAR BE WORN. This includes boots, dress shoes, sandals, flip-flops, crocs, any slip-on shoes, and/or fashion sneakers.  Additionally, other clothing that is prohibited but not limited to: any Denim material, dress clothing, dresses/skirts, sweaters, tank tops or bare midriffs. If you think your attire is inappropriate, it probably is inappropriate.

  • AFTER EACH CLASS CONCLUDES, CHANGE BACK INTO THE CLOTHES THAT WERE WORN TO SCHOOL.  NOTE: The clothing that a student wears in gym MUST be different than what they wear to school regardless if they wear athletic clothing to school.  NO EXCEPTIONS!

  • Purchase a school issued lock from Cedarbrook, use it in conjunction with his/her assigned locker in the locker room and change clothing in the locker room before and after each gym class. This lock may be used from 7-12th grade in our district.                                                       DO NOT SHARE LOCKERS OR LOCKS AND LOCK UP ALL OF YOUR BELONGINGS.   THE SDCT WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN ARTICLES.

  • GIVE AN OUTSTANDING EFFORT EACH DAY, in each and every activity, for his/her physical, mental and social growth as well as earning a high grade.   (Please understand that passing physical education is a PA state requirement.  Failure to pass gym class will result in being subjected to attending summer school.)

  • Bring in a physician signed note if the student is to miss gym class for more than one class.

  • Check-in all medications, including Asthma inhalers, with the nurse and if needed, use before and/or after gym class.

  •  Attend as many gym classes as possible per quarter. There is an attendance grade.  Due to the fact that the class only meets every 3 days there is a limited amount of time for evaluation.  (This means other classwork and/or extra-curricular activities need to be done during lunch times or after school, NOT DURING GYM TIME.                                  With adult and childhood obesity on the rise,The American Council On Exercise recommends 60 minutes of exercise daily. Our students do not currently get that much exercise, thus it is imperative that they attend every gym class.

  • Realize/understand that exercise and fitness based activities are extremely beneficial to your body both physically and mentally.  Research shows that people who exercise consistently are more healthy, perform well in mental activities (such as homework and tests), have lower stress levels, suffer less from depression and have a higher overall quality of life.
